The Decency of George W. Bush.

The Decency of George W. Bush.
From TownHall. com

WASHINGTON -- Election Day 2008 must have been filled with rueful paradoxes for the sitting president. Iraq -- the issue that dominated George W. Bush's presidency for five and a half bitter, controversial years -- is on the verge of a miraculous peace. And yet this accomplishment did little to revive Bush's political standing -- or to prevent his party from relegating him to a silent role.

The achievement is historic. In 2006, Iraq had descended into a sectarian killing spree that only seemed likely to stop when the supply of victims was exhausted. Showing Truman-like stubbornness, Bush pushed to escalate a war that most Americans -- and some at the Pentagon -- had already mentally abandoned.

The result? A Sunni tribal revolt against their al-Qaeda oppressors, an effective campaign against Shiite militias in Baghdad and Basra, and the flight of jihadists from Iraq to less deadly battlefields. In a more stable atmosphere, Iraq's politicians have made dramatic political progress. Iraqi military and police forces have grown in size and effectiveness and now fully control 13 of Iraq's 18 provinces. And in the month before Election Day, American combat deaths matched the lowest of the entire war.

For years, critics of the Iraq War asked the mocking question: "What would victory look like?" If progress continues, it might look something like what we've seen.

But Air Force One -- normally seen swooping into battleground states for rallies during presidential elections -- was mainly parked during this campaign. President Bush appeared with John McCain in public a total of three times -- and appeared in McCain's rhetoric as a foil far more often than that.

This seems to be Bush's current fate: Even success brings no praise. And the reasons probably concern Iraq. The absence of stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction in the aftermath of the war was a massive blow. The early conduct of the Iraq occupation was terribly ineffective. And hopes that the war had turned a corner -- repeatedly raised by Iraqis voting with purple fingers and approving a constitution -- were dashed too many times, until many Americans became unwilling to believe anymore.

Initial failures in Iraq acted like a solar eclipse, blocking the light on every other achievement. But those achievements, with the eclipse finally passing, are considerable by the measure of any presidency. Because of the passage of Medicare Part D, nearly 10 million low-income seniors are receiving prescription drugs at little or no cost. No Child Left Behind education reform has helped raise the average reading scores of fourth graders to their highest level in 15 years, and narrowed the achievement gap between white and African-American children. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has helped provide treatment for more than 1.7 million people and compassionate care for at least 2.7 million orphans and vulnerable children. And the decision to pursue the surge in Iraq will be studied as a model of presidential leadership.

These achievements, it is true, have limited constituencies to praise them. Many conservatives view Medicare, education reform and foreign assistance as heresies. Many liberals refuse to concede Bush's humanity, much less his achievements.

But that humanity is precisely what I will remember. I have seen President Bush show more loyalty than he has been given, more generosity than he has received. I have seen his buoyancy under the weight of malice and his forgiveness of faithless friends. Again and again, I have seen the natural tug of his pride swiftly overcome by a deeper decency -- a decency that is privately engaging and publicly consequential.

Before the G-8 summit in 2005, the White House senior staff overwhelmingly opposed a new initiative to fight malaria in Africa for reasons of cost and ideology -- a measure designed to save hundreds of thousands of lives, mainly of children under 5. In the crucial policy meeting, one person supported it: the president of the United States, shutting off debate with a moral certitude that others have criticized. I saw how this moral framework led him to an immediate identification with the dying African child, the Chinese dissident, the Sudanese former slave, the Burmese women's advocate. It is one reason I will never be cynical about government -- or about President Bush.

For some, this image of Bush is so detached from their own conception that it must be rejected. That is, perhaps, understandable. But it means little to me. Because I have seen the decency of George W. Bush.

If Bush is such a humanitarian, why have so many U.S. soldiers died in a war that was started based on lies?

I have no doubt, Bush will go down in history as one of the worst presidents, ever.

Bush plundered the country and left us with trillion dollar deficits. I will not write more as I don't want to think more of this ignoramus. No. I will not write.

Article Submission:

BARACK OBAMA INTENDS TO REQUIRE CHILDREN TO SERVE THE US THROUGH MANDATORY COMMUNITY SERVICE

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/service/

"Expand Service-Learning in Our Nation's Schools: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year. They will develop national guidelines for service- learning and will give schools better tools both to develop programs and to document student experience.

Green Job Corps: Obama and Biden will create an energy-focused youth jobs program to provide disadvantaged youth with service opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast-growing career fields.

Expand YouthBuild Program: Obama and Biden will expand the YouthBuild program, which gives disadvantaged young people the chance to complete their high school education, learn valuable skills and build affordable housing in their communities. They will grow the program so that 50,000 low-income young people a year a chance to learn construction job skills and complete high school.

Require 100 Hours of Service in College: Obama and Biden will establish a new American Opportunity Tax Credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.

Promote College Serve-Study: Obama and Biden will ensure that at least 25 percent of College Work-Study funds are used to support public service opportunities instead of jobs in dining halls and libraries. "

Does this remind you of other socialists putting children to work? I wouldn't want my son to HAVE TO do this. What if he wants to do other things with his time, such as sports or music?

Bush and decency? 1. Patient neglect at Walter Reed Army Hospital. 2. US Attorney firings. 3. Libby/Plame Affair (Outing a CIA agent). 4. Iraq war over 300,000 Iraqi dead. 5. Afghanistan (leaving before the job was done). 6. Iran saber rattling. 7. North Korea (mishandling nuclear issue). 8. The War on Terror (failure to capture Osama bin Laden, dubious allies). 9. Civilian contractors in Iraq (poor service for big bucks). 10. Military Commissions Act (torture, kangaroo courts, indefinite detention, and loss of habeas corpus). 11. Hurricane Katrina and the drowning of New Orleans. 12. NSA warrantless wiretapping. 13. SWIFT (international money transfers). 14. Black sites and rendition. I'm just warming up!

I also commend President Bush for his deep faith and his determination to stick with the fight to seek out and eliminate terrorism wherever it was found. I do not feel as safe now, knowing a green idealist is taking over, I felt much safer knowing that we were being protected by a legacy of war mongers who are on my side. I cannot forget the personal impact 911 had on my life and the now permanent fear in my heart. I want peace but know that it comes at a high price. Our county was founded by those who died for our freedom. This is what the good, brave soldiers fighting overseas are doing for us in the Iraqi war. They are not just fighting for us, they are fighting for WORLD peace and unfortunately, fight they must. The terrorists do not have a conscience that coaxes them to sit and ponder the ramifications of their cruel acts, they only know hatred and violence. We can only fight them on thier terms.

Does the Kool-Aid taste good?
Goebbels would be proud of the main stream media. Tell a lie long enough and big enough and people will begin to believe it is true.
Foreigners illegally in the US to commit acts of war are not subject to civilian court jurisdiction. Wiretapping foreign cell phone calls is not illegal nor does it require a warrant. Evidence gathered by such means is never used in a civilian court.
As for Obamo mandatory unpaid servitude program, did he not get the memo? Our constitution says forced servitude is illegal. Unpaid servitude is illegal. Force children to work for no pay is not intended to bread a spirit of volunteering. Volunteering is done without expectation of reward. One does not volunteer to get one's name in the paper or get a building named after them.
One would think the first "halfrican American" president would grasp this concept. Ah but then he is a far left liberal and believes that the government must take care of us. As demonstrated by his exceedingly poor record on personal charitable contribution. When liberal do "charity" they do it by reaching into their neighbor's pocket. Not their own.
One more point on the war against those who wish to force Islam on the US. More men died in the first 5 minutes of the D-Day invasion than in both gulf wars combined.
And a lot more terrorist have been killed than US service members.

Why is it that the President gets blamed for everything that happens during his 4 years in office? Do people think this country is really run by one person? Don't they know that the Congress and the Senate have a vote?

People elect a figure head, who cannot, even under the best of circumstances, have his way at all times.

So why, do people continue to blame a single elected individual for the entirety of problem?

Fishgutz, so much anger. So much hate. Obamo? Halfrican-American? And then, on another topic, you question about being racist if you didn't vote for Sen. Obama? What a sad fantasy world you live in.

Then again I would expect this from you seeing as you are the person who called autistic children "tards" on this blog.

Please, if you haven't moved already, hurry it up and go post your nonsense on some other blog down south.

Does that asshole that runs this blog realize that we went through a big argument about whether to post divisive political crap here, to the detriment of the local cause of cleaning up local government?

You Republicans got your asses handed to you because your policies are horrible. Deal with it. You're a bunch of damned babies that are hollow patriots; you can't keep your ignorance from screwing up anything that it touches.

STOP SCREWING UP THIS BLOG WITH YOUR PARTISAN CRAP OR SOMEONE IS GOING TO CREATE ONE THAT WILL FOCUS ONLY ON LOCAL ATKINSON ISSUES AND THEN YOU CAN PLAY GAMES WITH ALL YOUR LITTLE RUSH LIMBAUGH CLONES HERE. Idiot...

Wow nice post! Typical for someone that hides behind anonymus.
As far as Obama taking "care" of us and spreading the wealth, how is someone that doesn't "spread" his wealth and doesn't even know where is own family is.

The indecency of George W. Bush.

A few facts to address your delusion (although if I was guilty of voting for one of the worst presidents EVER, I'd probably be grasping for some justification too.

1) A needless war

Evidence: 4100+ dead American military, 30,000+ serious wounded, an insurgency in Afghanistan raging out of countrol, total pricetag over $1 trillion tax dollars, many more people around the world willing to trade their life for the chance to kill Americans.

2) Domestic Policy Disaster

Evidence: Real conservatives are horrified to realize that George Bush meant almost nothing he said during the election; government is expanded, a government running a sorplus is run into the ground, gov't scientists are censored regarding globalwarming, business lobbiests are allowed into the White House to write legislation that is supposed to regulate the, product inspectors are fired and China poisons our children and pets with lead and melamine. Appointees Rumsfeld and Atty General Gonsalves are disasters and leave in shame, and after promising that he is a "united, not a divider" George Bush advisor Carl Rove proceeds to politicize everything including even the US Justice department, leaving Americans more polarized than ever before.
-------------------------------
Wow, that's just two issues and I haven't even gotten started.

The deferement accepting chickenhawks that pushed us into an unnecessary war; trippled gas prices; no gain in real earnings for working people while the rich got rich off tax breaks. Billion dollar give-aways to oil companies breaking profit records. It's all so obscene, and so obvious, it's amazing there are fools still willing to support the man.

But is all the above true? Just look at the election results. Two elections in a row Republicans get crushed and continue to lose elections around the country! Sarah Palin one heartbeat away from leading the free world? Are you serious? The Republican party has become a mostly Deep South regional party of yahoos that are afraid to pick up a newspaper and rely on idiot zombies like Hannity, O'Reilly, and Limbaugh to do their thinking for them.

But real Americans are better than that and they have rejected the party of hate-filled lying loudmouths two elections in a row! Change is coming, led by a thinking man who will unite this country, restore American prestige around the world, care for our veterans and children, all while lowering the level of hatred aimed at us.

Yes we can! Yes we DID!

ENOUGH! ISN'T IT TIME TO GET ON WITH IT?

Not that we shouldn't remember
our history because it is bound to repeat itself unless we are watchful.

Please,I hope the venting is over and bring us back to the purpose of this Blog.

The tax rate is a concern, the inactivity of the selectmen:some of our elected officals are falling down on the job:the school budget:a budget comm. that seems to agree with every thing put before them: and this is just for starters.

We have so much going wrong in our own little corner of the world that needs looking in to. I thought we are trying to get some dignity and honesty back to our Town Government.

To Anon @ 8:47pm;

STOP DRINKING THE KOOL-AID!

1.)He did not personally neglect anyone, and when he found out about it, fired the administrator, and appointed an oversight panel.

2.)EVERY PResident fires the US Attys. They serve at the pleasure of the President. They were lucky to keep their jobs 3 years into his presidency.

3.)This one has been debunked by Joe Wilson himself. Bob Novak admitted that he had heard about Plame from Wilson first. Plame was a desk jockey at the time, not a NOC. Wilson published the controversy not Bush, nor Rove.

4.)IRAQ 4,000 US troops killed, no official number on Iraqis. Regime change in Iraq signed into official policy by Bill Clinton in 1998. Approved by Congress and UN.

5.)Afghanistan- You must be an idiot, we have NEVER LEFT! We still have troops on the ground right now, still looking for Obama. In fact one of Atkinson's own was involved in this operation.

6.)Iran has been rattling that saber for 12 years. That is one of the prime reasons we cant leave Iraq prematurely, because Iran will march in and take over.

7.)The NK Nuke issue was mishandled by Jimmy Carter who negotiated the transfer of nuclear technology as long as they promised not to make weapons, and Bill Clinton who signed the treaty! Guess what NK LIED!

8.)90% of Al Queda caught or killed. 8 Top Guys under Bin Laden caught or killed. Only true statement here is that Bin Laden has not been found yet, but his freedom and effectivenes have been severely curtailed.

9.)This is a constant problem, and was evident in Bosnia, Somalia, Herzgovinia, and many others, But you wish to blame this on Bush, personally? EVERY Government contractor overbills, look at the Big Dig, if you dont believe me.This problem predated Bush, and to be frank, he has had a lot bigger problems to worry about, than how much a company charges for supplies.

10.)Is this worse than FDR's concentration camps for US citizens in WWII? Or the detention of enemy combatants without trial or charges till the end of the war? The difference in this case is that these enemy combatants do not wear either uniform or flag, and therefore are not entitled to Geneva Convention protections, even though we have graciously provided them anyway. Nor are they US citizens derserving of access to our Constitution. But, again, this is Bush's fault, right?

11.)BUSH CAUSED A HURRICANE? Bush called Gove. Blanco 3 times the weekend preceding begging for her to request Federal help, she refused. Mayor Nagin did not order evacuation. People were too stupid to leave town, in spite of 4 days of warnings that they were going to be hit by a cat5 storm, and knowing that they live 90 feet BELOW SEA LEVEL. bt this is bush's fault?

12.)NSA is wiretapping calls from OUTSIDE the US form known Terrorist cells. Dont need Warrant for outside US. But even this is not true, because they get the warrants from a FISA court. This has been investigated ad nauseum, and not ONE single violation of a US citizens civil rights has been found. NOT ONE.

13.) What the hell are you talking about?

Dubya is without a doubt, the worst president ever in the history of the U.S.

Decency? What a joke. We have record spending, record deficits, record unemployment, record oil prices, record foreclosures, a war based on a reason of the week, financial markets in ruin and you say this guy is decent? HA!

What kind of BS propaganda and spin is this? Just look around you and see the evidence of his Sherman March to the Sea. Not a thing is left standing. It is called a scorched earth policy. That is why so many republican senators and congressmen retired. They would rather retire and keep their nest egg of funds they raised rather than waste it on a re-election bid they knew was a waste of time because republicans stood little chance of winning much after this debacle.

Blame all the stuff you want on Democrats but the facts are this: for six years a republican majority in the senate, congress and oval office could have done things a lot differently. The result is a Republican party in a complete shambles. We always heard the republicans were conservative, low spending, small government, family values, blah blah blah. What happened? They turned into the big spending, big government, partisan crooks that ran everything into the ground. How many bills did Bush veto? Like two? Never met a spending bill he didn't like. They did all the stuff they accuse democrats of doing.

This is a party that has lost its way. I voted for McCain in 2000 when he should have been the nominee but the powers within the party wanted Dubya. So they railroaded McCain and now got what they deserved.

The results showed up in this election. Other than Texas (even in TX the difference was only 8%), what other large electoral vote rich state did the republicans take in the presidential election? Almost every small, backwater state went red.

It will take many years for the Republican party to recover from this disaster. They've blown it so bad, I am afraid they will not have enough votes in the senate and house to keep the democrats in check. A party controlling all three branches of govt is not a good thing as we just saw with the republicans.

I feel bad for McCain cause I really like the guy. He's a real American hero. Spent over 5 years in one of the worst POW camps. Dubya couldn't have lasted 5 minutes there. I have to say that the selection of Palin was another strategic error. Other than the right wing, polls show nobody else was convinced she was qualified to serve as president. McCain should have went with the guy he wanted or at least picked someone from Florida or Pennsylvania where he could have gotten some electoral votes. Palin scored him a whole 3 electoral votes from Alaska. Wow.

The republican party is a disappointment to the entire country. They let a moron run the show and they let a psycho named Cheney really run the show.

I can't think of one positive outcome from this administration and I've tried. Now I stopped looking at my 401K statements cause it is too painful. Thank you George Dubya Bush for the reaming I got. But at least one fellow idiot in this country thinks your decent. So ya got that going for ya, George.
